Danny Poarch

Danny Poarch devoted 36 years to Alamo Heights ISD, leaving an enduring impact as an educator, coach, and unmistakable voice of Mule athletics. His career reflects a deep commitment to students, sportsmanship, and the Alamo Heights community.

Danny began his career in education at Jonesboro ISD, where he taught science and elementary physical education while coaching every sport offered at both the junior high and high school levels. In 1985, he joined Alamo Heights ISD, serving first at Alamo Heights Junior School as a physical education teacher and coach before spending the majority of his career at Woodridge Elementary, where he taught physical education from 1991 until his retirement in 2021.

A cornerstone of the Woodridge Elementary PE program, Danny launched “Friendship Day,” a pioneering initiative that fostered inclusion and connection among students and served as a precursor to today’s Unified sports programs. Throughout his time in Alamo Heights, he coached football, basketball, track, volleyball, baseball, and freshman boys’ basketball. He is especially remembered for reviving the Alamo Heights High School girls’ basketball program from 1989 to 2000, leading the team to two bi-district championships.

Beyond coaching, Danny supported athletics in countless ways. He served for more than two decades as the “Voice of the Muleyard,” announcing football games from 2001 to 2022, and as the voice of basketball in the Muledome for many seasons. He also worked behind the scenes as a football filmer for nearly 30 years.

Danny earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Texas A&M University and a Master of Education from Southwest Texas State University. He later served as a regional director for the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches and as General Manager of Factory of Champions.

Danny’s legacy is shared with his late wife, Mary, a respected science educator and leader, and continues through his son, Matt, who graduated from AHHS in 2007 and followed in the family tradition as a teacher and coach. Danny remains active in his church and supports His Hands Ministry in Edinburg, Texas.
